MESILLA - The New Mexico Department of Transportation is gearing up to launch a $22.7 million multi-modal improvement project along 1.419 miles of University Avenue from Avenida de Mesilla to South Main Street. Construction is set to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2024.
The project, led by La Calerita Construction, LLC, includes a range of upgrades designed to enhance safety and accessibility, according to a news release from NMDOT. Improvements will feature new curbs, gutters, sidewalks, ADA-compliant ramps, a multi-use path, storm drainage systems, roadway signage and striping, new lighting and updated railroad crossings.
Traffic impacts start Nov. 26
Starting Nov. 26, drivers should anticipate daytime lane closures near the intersection of Avenida de Mesilla and University Avenue. Crews will remove old sidewalks, signage and begin dirt work in preparation for the project. Construction is scheduled to occur Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
NMDOT has noted that significant traffic impacts are not expected until mid-December. Motorists are encouraged to plan for minor delays during the initial phase and stay informed about potential changes.
Project goals and updates
The improvements aim to create a safer, more accessible corridor for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. In the NMDOT news release, the agency expressed gratitude to the public for their cooperation during the construction process.
