LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces City Council received an update Monday, Dec. 9, on the Realize Las Cruces development code update during a work session.

Launched in spring 2021, Realize Las Cruces aims to revise land development codes and align them with the Elevate Las Cruces Comprehensive Plan. The project is currently in its third and final stage of developing proposed amendments to the city’s land-use regulations.

City staff provided a presentation that included feedback from community members, the Historic Preservation Commission, the New Mexico Construction Association and residents. Key topics discussed included roadway cross-sections, park dedication requirements, outdoor lighting standards and land-use restrictions.

Councilor Becki Graham highlighted the importance of ensuring roadway designs can accommodate emergency vehicles, including fire trucks. Mayor Pro Tem Johana Bencomo stressed the need for the revised code to support growth and redevelopment in underserved areas.

City staff and consultants will continue refining the document, with a final draft scheduled for City Council consideration on Feb. 18, 2025. No formal action was taken during the work session.

The draft Realize Las Cruces document and supporting Technical Manual are available online. Monday’s meeting, along with all City Council work sessions and regular meetings, can be viewed on the city’s YouTube channel.

The City Council will hold its next regular meeting at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, at Council Chambers inside City Hall, 700 N. Main St.
