SANTA FE - With the holiday season fast approaching, health officials are urging New Mexicans to get their flu vaccines before their holiday celebrations to ensure protection during family gatherings and travel.

The New Mexico Department of Health emphasizes the importance of getting vaccinated now, as the flu shot takes up to two weeks to provide maximum protection.

“Early December is the perfect time to get your flu shot if you haven’t already,” said Dr. Miranda Durham, NMDOH Chief Medical Officer. “This ensures you’re protected before traveling and spending time with loved ones.”

Who should get vaccinated?

The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older. However, certain groups are at higher risk for severe complications, including:

  • Individuals with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, lung or heart disease.
  • Pregnant individuals, including those up to two weeks postpartum.
  • Children under five, especially those younger than two.
  • Adults aged 50 and older.
  • Residents and healthcare workers in nursing homes and long-term care facilities.

How to Get Vaccinated

Vaccines are widely available:

  • For adults: Insured individuals can contact their pharmacy or primary care provider. Visit vaccine.doh.nm.gov or call 1-833-SWNURSE to locate providers.
  • For children: Vaccines are free for all New Mexicans under 18 through the Vaccines for Children program, regardless of insurance status. Contact a public health office to schedule an appointment.
