ALBUQUERQUE - A new independent horror thriller is now in production in central New Mexico. Sweetwater, described as a chilling exploration of grief and the supernatural, began filming this month in Albuquerque and Tijeras and will continue through April.

The film centers on Jolene, a middle-aged woman played by Kimberley “Kim” Pember, who is struggling with the recent loss of her longtime husband, Mason (Robert “Bobby” Lewis Stephensen). Her desperate attempt to bring him back to life unleashes terrifying consequences.

"As someone who's experienced how alienating grief can be, Sweetwater is a story near and dear to my heart," said producer and co-director Mae Joy Harper. "I hope it connects with people, so they know they're not alone. I’m excited to tell a story about the need to lean on each other — whether you're asking for help or offering it."

The film is written and directed by Harper and Jerome C. Keith, who also serve as producers alongside Corey Victor Ford. Todd Spradlin is credited as co-producer.

New Mexico Film Office Director Steve Graham praised the project for spotlighting independent voices.

“This is a great example of independent voices telling diverse and compelling stories here in New Mexico,” Graham said. “Our state continues to provide a fertile environment for emerging filmmakers.”

The production will employ more than 40 New Mexicans, including 26 resident crew members, six principal actors and ten background performers.
