LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces City Council on Monday, Dec. 16, approved a resolution committing $1.35 million in funding for the Paseos Verdes housing development, a low-income housing project planned for 905 S. Campo St.

The development, spanning 7.22 acres near Colorado Avenue and south Campo Street, will provide 218 energy-efficient housing units for veterans, seniors, and the local workforce. Construction of the first phase, which includes 80 units on the west end of the property, is scheduled to begin in January 2026.

The project's total cost is estimated at $22.17 million, with funding coming from several sources, including low-income Housing Tax Credits, National Housing Trust funds, and local contributions. The city's commitment includes $1.35 million in funding, which covers impact fee waivers. Additional loan terms and funding details will be determined later.

In other business, the council accepted two grant awards. The first, a $92,100 Byrne Memorial Grant from the New Mexico Department of Public Safety, will allow the Las Cruces Police Department to purchase and install six dual-purpose modular surveillance systems.

The second grant, totaling $104,376, was awarded to the Mesilla Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization by the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The funding will be used for salaries, fringe benefits, supplies, travel, professional services and minor equipment.

The Dec. 16 meeting, like all City Council meetings and work sessions, is available for public viewing on the city’s YouTube channel.

The council's next regular meeting is scheduled for Jan. 6, 2025, at City Council Chambers, 700 N. Main St.
