Las Cruces police issue reminder about vehicle warm-up theft risks
Drivers urged to avoid leaving vehicles unattended during winter months to prevent theft
Organ Mountain News report
LAS CRUCES - The Las Cruces Police Department is warning motorists about the risks of vehicle theft during cold weather, particularly when cars are left running unattended to warm up or defrost windshields.
Vehicle warm-up thefts often occur when drivers start their cars and leave them unattended with doors unlocked. While remote-start systems are common in newer vehicles, police caution that these features can also attract potential thieves.
Safety tips for motorists
Police recommend the following precautions to reduce the risk of theft:
- Do not leave vehicles running and unattended.
- Avoid leaving vehicles running with children inside.
- Remove keys, valuables, and personal documents from the vehicle.
- Avoid storing garage door openers, firearms, or ammunition in the car.
- Ensure windows and doors are closed and locked when leaving a vehicle unattended.
- Consider parking in a garage or gated area if possible.
- Invest in an audible alarm system with an automatic kill switch to prevent the vehicle from starting if tampered with.
- Etch the vehicle’s windows with the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
- Avoid leaving garage doors open or partially open, as even small gaps can allow entry.
Reporting suspicious activity
Residents are encouraged to report suspicious individuals or activity in their neighborhoods. If a vehicle is stolen, report it immediately by calling the police at 575-526-0795 or 911 in an emergency. Be prepared to provide the vehicle’s make, model, color, VIN and license plate number.
