Las Cruces residents brace for potential snow and cold weather
Forecast predicts temperatures in the 20s, prompting residents to prepare homes and vehicles
LAS CRUCES - Residents across Las Cruces are preparing for a potential winter storm that could bring snow and temperatures dropping into the 20s as early as Tuesday. While many express discomfort with the colder weather, they say they are ready to face the challenges it brings.
Local residents have taken steps to prepare their homes, gathering blankets, coats, and checking their heating systems. However, experts are also urging people to pay attention to vehicle safety as winter conditions can increase risks on the road.
Vehicle Safety Precautions
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has outlined key steps to ensure vehicles are winter-ready:
Tires:
- Inspect tires monthly and before long trips. For accurate readings, check them when they’re cold, or after being stationary for at least three hours.
- Replace tires every six years, even if they appear unused, as recommended by many vehicle manufacturers.
- Check for damage, including cuts, punctures, or bulges on the tread and sidewalls. Tread depth should be at least 2/32 of an inch.
- Don’t forget to inspect the spare tire.
Battery: Cold weather can strain batteries in both gasoline and diesel engines, while reducing driving range for electric and hybrid vehicles. Mechanics recommend having the battery and charging system inspected and replacing worn belts or addressing other issues.
Floor Mats: Winter often brings slushy conditions that can interfere with car interiors. Drivers are advised to use thick rubber mats, ensuring they are properly installed to avoid obstructing pedals. Retention clips should be used, and mats must be the correct size for the vehicle.
Lights: Headlights, brake lights, turn signals and emergency flashers should all be tested regularly. Trailer brake lights and turn signals should also be checked when applicable.
Windshield Wipers: A single snowstorm can deplete windshield wiper fluid quickly. Drivers should fill reservoirs with winter-specific fluid containing de-icer. Additionally, replacing worn wiper blades or upgrading to heavy-duty winter wipers is recommended for areas with significant snowfall.
Cooling System: Coolant levels must meet manufacturer specifications, and the system should be checked for leaks. Routine maintenance, including testing and replacing old coolant, can prevent issues during extreme temperatures.
Experts also suggest scheduling a vehicle tune-up to identify worn hoses, leaks or other necessary repairs.
Preparing for Winter Conditions
Las Cruces residents say they are taking steps to ensure safety and comfort during the potential storm. For many, this includes not only personal preparations but also ensuring their vehicles are ready for icy roads and colder conditions.
As the community braces for winter weather, staying informed and prepared will be essential.
