SANTA FE - A bill that would establish a fund to help prepare construction-ready sites for business development in New Mexico is headed to Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s desk following final approval in the state House of Representatives.

Senate Bill 169, which passed the House by a vote of 59-4, would create the Site Readiness Fund to support pre-development work on locations targeted for potential business expansion or relocation. That work could include surveying, permitting, site assessments and landscaping to make properties ready for immediate construction.

“Construction-ready locations that are prepped and ready for businesses to easily set up shop will incentivize companies to open or expand in the state,” said Rep. Meredith Dixon, D-Albuquerque, one of the bill’s sponsors. “This proactive approach will give us a competitive edge in attracting new businesses, growing our economy and creating jobs in communities around the state.”

In addition to Dixon, the bill is sponsored by Rep. Joy Garratt, D-Albuquerque; Rep. Joshua Hernandez, R-Rio Rancho; Senate Majority Whip Michael Padilla, D-Albuquerque; and Sen. Craig Brandt, R-Rio Rancho.

The legislation now awaits the governor’s signature.
