SANTA FE - With the holiday season in full swing, state officials are encouraging New Mexicans to shop local and take advantage of this year’s Small Business Saturday Tax Holiday on Nov. 30. The annual event offers an opportunity to support small businesses across the state while enjoying tax-free purchases on a wide variety of items.

The tax holiday, which begins at 12:01 a.m. and ends at midnight on Nov. 30, allows non-franchise small businesses to waive gross receipts taxes on qualifying items priced under $500. Shoppers can save on toys, electronics, books, sporting goods and more, though gift cards are excluded. A full list of qualifying items is available on the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department’s website.

“Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity for all of us to save a little money while also supporting our neighbors’ home-grown New Mexico businesses,” said Stephanie Schardin Clarke, Secretary of the Taxation and Revenue Department.

Promoting local talent and craftsmanship

The New Mexico Tourism Department is also bringing back its New Mexico True Certified holiday gift guide, highlighting 145 locally produced items ranging from fine art to home décor and apparel. Launched last year, the shop-local campaign has already generated more than 12,000 website referrals for participating businesses. This year, the department aims to build on that success.

“New Mexico is home to some of the most talented artists and creators out there, but they don’t always have the resources to promote their products,” said Acting Tourism Secretary Lancing Adams. “We’re thrilled to bring this campaign back for another year and continue showcasing the craft, care, and artistry of New Mexico True Certified goods.”

Supporting the economy and community

Small businesses are a vital part of New Mexico’s economy, employing over 345,000 people — more than half of the state’s private workforce, according to Economic Development Secretary-Designate Rob Black. “By shopping at small businesses during the holidays, we support these jobs, help our neighbors, and invest in our own communities,” Black said.

State officials also highlighted the broader benefits of shopping local. Dollars spent at small businesses tend to stay in the community, recirculating to strengthen the local tax base and support services like education and infrastructure. Local businesses are also more likely to give back to charities and community programs.

Family-friendly holiday events

To complement the shop-local push, New Mexico’s MainStreet and Arts & Cultural Districts are hosting holiday events across the state, encouraging families to explore local markets and connect with small business owners.

“All year long, we work to support district initiatives that grow the local economy and keep dollars in New Mexico,” said New Mexico MainStreet Director Daniel J. Gutierrez. “This holiday season is a perfect time to see that effort in action.”

Whether you’re shopping for unique gifts or participating in festive community events, state officials say the Small Business Saturday Tax Holiday offers the perfect chance to make a meaningful impact.

“This is about more than saving money,” Adams said. “It’s about making a difference in the lives of our neighbors and celebrating the incredible talent New Mexico has to offer.”
