LAS VEGAS, NM - The Roswell Symphony Orchestra is preparing for the holiday season with a special performance of the one-act opera Amahl & the Night Visitors, featuring local musicians, dancers and acting talent.

Audiences can enjoy the classic seasonal performance on Dec. 22 at the Pearson Auditorium on the New Mexico Military Institute campus in Roswell.

Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera debuted for television audiences across the country on Christmas Eve in 1951, inspired by a Dutch painting of the three wise men presenting gifts to the newborn Jesus.

The story follows Amahl, a young boy who uses a crutch to walk. He and his widowed mother are visited by the three kings on their way to find the Christ child. During the visit, another selfless gift is given and a miracle realized, reminding audiences of the meaning of Christmas.

The opera will bring the spirit of the holidays to life with a 30-member orchestra and the region’s Way Way Off-Broadway Theatre Company, as well as volunteers from the Roswell Symphony Chorus, Roswell High School Choir, the New Mexico Military Institute Choir and dancers from Studio+ in Roswell. The performance will feature props and costumes.
